Time to start up our virtual rides over the winter. You will need a Zwift account and a way to ride in Zwift to join us. There are plenty of ways to do this from a basic ‘dumb’ trainer all the way up to a dedicated Zwifting setup.
If you are a new signup to Zwift, you will want to join the WCC Club section on Zwift since the rides I will post will be just for our group and as part of the WCC. You join a Club through the Zwift companion app for iOS or Android.
Once you have requested to join, one of the ‘owners’ from the club have to approve the request so shoot me a message so I can approve you.
Once you are in and setup, you can join our virtual rides and we’ll ride together through the winter.
We also have a discord channel setup so we can talk to each other during the ride. It’s a nice motivator and social thing during the off season and a great way to maintain/target fitness for the upcoming road/trail season.
Rides will be posted like they are for the road but will include the Zwift route and Discord channel details. I hope to see you on the virtual roads with us soon.
Sure. You need to do this on the Zwift companion app for iOS and Android. If you haven’t downloaded this yet you will need to do that and then log into it using your Zwift account credentials.
Here’s the link to their step by step instructions.
I should probably point out that you can ride on Zwift with just the computer/tablet app but you can’t join a club or join our club rides without the Zwift Companion app.
did you decide what evening’s this is being run in? I am not on zwift this year, giving the free mywhoosh a try. I will jump in on discord if I am on mywhoosh…
The first two rides are up and posted. The way to sign up is using the Zwift Companion app on your phone. If you don’t register for the ride here, you won’t be able to join the ride.
First go to the club section and select WaterlooCyclingClub. (see above post for joining and getting approved)
Choose the event and then scroll down a bit and select the plus to register for that event. It will now give you the option of adding this to your calendar. Now you are set up to ride that event.
In the example shown, I log into Zwift and get ready to ride before 7pm on Nov 20th and Zwift will ask me about joining the event and will put me into the event start. In our events, we are the only ones riding that course (that we can see). You can join a bit late but after 15 minutes you are out of luck.
Like on the road, we aim to ride together. Sometimes that means speeding up and sometimes that means slowing down a bit. This is where using the Discord voice channel is so helpful. If we see someone falling behind (or we are that person) we can ask folks to ease up a bit.
I log into Discord on my phone, join the Rec voice channel and then put it in speakerphone mode and then just rest my phone next to my computer. I have had no issues hearing other folks when they talk or having them hear me when I speak. YMMV.
Thank you! Shall sign up. I am in need of a hip replacement, class 4 bone on bone osteoarthritis. About a week ago I had Synvisc injected into the hip and I am relatively pain free and can now throw my leg over the top bar to get on the bicycle! Inflammation is not fun! Hopefully I will be good for a few months, time to rebuild!
