First Road O-Cup: Mosport Classic

@jmaloney as Kevin said, don’t worry about that stuff too much. Do pay attention to the wind though. Hopefully you can get a practice lap in and warm up. It’s a SW wind, so a cross tail wind on the climb but the descent will be tough with those gusts, especially the first large bend going downhill. You’ll carry more speed into it than the lower sections of the descent, so I’d advise you keep an eye on others as people will get blown toward the inside of that turn.

This is your first race in E4, so just have fun and enjoy the experience. The peloton usually stays together in that category, but Mosport is a race of attrition with all the climbing. If you have the same fitness you had last summer you can probably attack and stay away toward the last couple laps, or earlier, depending on how you feel. There could be other fit people capable of riding away from the peloton and upgrading easily, or not. You’ll figure it out over the first half of the race. At the end of the day it’s better to go for it and leave nothing in the tank than just sit in the pack and sprint for 10th.

It’ll be a cool morning, so I hope you have some warm, but not too warm kit to wear. A vest will be key if you have one. If you don’t I have a medium Faction vest you can borrow and a medium “fino therm” long sleeve cold weather WCC jersey that’s good in those temps with a light base layer under it. A good pair of wind proof gloves will also save your hands from freezing as half the lap you’re not putting out a lot of energy and will be getting blasted by the wind. Let me know if you need anything, I could drop it off tonight.

Thanks Mark, I don’t have a vest but I’ve got a nice thermal long sleeve base layer which I think will be good enough. Appreciate it though.

Good to hear. That will keep you warm. Don’t forget to wiggle your fingers and toes to keep them warm. It would be a good morning for shoe covers if you have some.

Good luck and have fun!

Annnnd last thing. You have 83 other racers in E4! Try to stay in the top 20 or so without wasting too much energy and stay hidden from the wind. There will be a big stretching out of the group downhill and around the very bottom sharp bend before the track turns uphill. You’ll save a ton of energy by staying toward the front quarter of the field and can respond to groups getting away.

It looks like we had a solid local turnout for the first road race of the year, heck, the first one in a couple years! It would be great to hear some stories from race day. If anyone feels like creating their own separate forum post and writing a race report the club would love to read it. It doesn’t have to be long or overly detailed, just whatever you remembered from the day, the lessons you learned or what you enjoyed the most.

Below are the results of local racers that went out and gave it their all. There were a few DNFs across multiple categories. It’s always frustrating to be taken out by a mechanical, crash or just a bad day. I think everyone that’s raced for a number of years has experienced this. I’ll let these racers share their stories if they wish. I just hope everyone got through the day without injuries.

Sad start for me to report. Was a few riders behind and to the left of this incident. Mosport OCup 2022 Elite 4 Lap 1 Crash - YouTube

That sucks! How are you doing?

Glad to hear you’re okay. That’s an unfortunate end to the race for you. Hope you got to enjoy the venue a bit.

I love the couple comments on the video. The guy owns his mistake and was concerned for others. Great to see.

I almost caused something like this in 2019. There was a patch of ice and snow on the right edge of the road under or before the structure over half way up the climb. I got squeezed and stuck on the right side approaching it but was able to hop over it.

Our race (M1) was hard and fun. The wind was crazy 55kmh gusting to over 80kmh.
A cross headwind on the main downhill, Block headwind across to the climb and then a sheltered mild cross tail up the climb with a tailwind on the finishing straight. The wind made it so that there was little rest on the course anywhere and we were literally nearly blown off our bikes at times.

Pollett attacked solo very early on lap 1 (Less than 1km into the race) and was away for about 30 minutes.

On lap three WOB 1-2’d us on the hill. (McKee and Pop). We were slightly out of position when they went and we chased to get in contact. We made it to within about 5 seconds where Patte made a heroic bridge across to the break. Ray, Jay, Adam and I were in the chase group with a number of Ascent riders and a couple of others.

Adam tried a bridge towing an Ascent rider (who wouldn’t work at all). Frustrated Adam sat up and then I tried to bridge across as well) Got close (within 10 seconds) but just couldn’t make it. Kevin Higgins was dropped from the break and joined our group and we picked up another dropped rider from the break as well.

Then we rolled with the Ascent guys and tried to get organized to close the gap. The break went out to 1:40 and we worked pretty hard to bring it back. Jay and Ray would typically work on the steep part of the hill, I’d take the shallower part of the hill to the finishing straight and starting down the hill and then Adam would take the main downhill and so on. We managed to close the gap to 50 seconds but couldn’t get any closer.

We realized the chase was futile and then worked to burn other riders off our wheel. On one of the climbs I saw one of the Ascent riders directly behind me (Rollie) was struggling so I let a small gap open to the rider in front of me and then accelerated up to the front, pulled the group and dropped him. Another Ascent rider (Tom Nesbit) fell off the back earlier. Adam had dropped from our group on the hill earlier (at about the halfway mark he told us to go on) and was riding a couple minutes behind us.

In the end it was Ray, Jay, myself and Kevin Higgins in the final 4 laps. With three laps to go it started raining and got pretty cold and miserable. With I think two laps to go Mark S (eventual winner) lapped us and then the remnants of the break passed as well. He had a spectacular ride and rode off the front of the break to come in and win solo.

On last lap Kevin tried a couple of attacks but we stayed on his wheel. Ray countered and the two of them headed for the finish line. Ray got Kevin at the line for 9th, Kevin 10th, Jay 11th and me 12th. Patte finished 8th up the road from us after working in the break, attacking the break and riding solo for almost a lap and then getting caught. He had a really strong ride.

It was a good day but a little frustrating as being just that little bit out of position meant we couldn’t make the move. Thankfully Patte made that great bridge to the break. It would have been nice to have at least one of us up there to support him but that’s racing.

The event was superbly organized and the sponsors were fantastic. It was really nice seeing everyone again and catching up with people we haven’t seen in literally 2-3 years.

Mosport was a fantastic venue for my first cycle race ever and I had a great time. Nervous with no idea what to expect, Kevin provided some awesome pointers on the start line which helped me relax a bit.

Throughout the race I spent way too much time out in the wind and I certainly was not prepared for the efforts required for the climb. After the ninth time I blew up and fell off the back, riding solo for the rest of the race.

Also, I somehow lost track of the number of laps I had completed and after review of my data afterwards realized I rode an extra lap. I guess I was having so much fun I didn’t want it to end.

It was a fun way to start the season, but that course is just death by a 1000 attacks.

The first descent was a little hairy. I think everyone was a little nervous for the first race in a few years and there was a bit of contact with riders fighting for wheels. After the climb things started to settle as people learnt their places.

After a few unsuccessful attacks by riders (myself trying one) two guys got away on what I think was lap 5. The pack seemed content letting them go and over the next few laps their lead grew to just over 30s and the main pack slowly lost a few riders each lap until we were down to about 15 riders.

The last 10 laps was when our pack really started to chase, but with our pack being 2 Faction (Sean and myself), 2 UNC, and the rest individuals there wasn’t any coordination. Sean got away for about 2 laps but got stuck in no man’s land unable to bridge.

With about 5 laps to go the attacks started and this ended up crushing our chances of catching the two leaders. Hitting the hill super hard stringing the group out and then coasting The downhill as no one wanted to pull in the headwind. I almost got dropped here a few time but managed to stay on.

I was in good position starting the final climb but when the attack went my legs just couldn’t respond and the band had snapped. I got over the top and cruised in a bit upset with myself for being so close yet so far. I’ll use the Covid excuse since it disrupted my training a few weeks before the race, but really these triathlete legs aren’t used to the hard surges of road racing. More Tuesday hammerfests are needed

I was in the same boat… I had to come to a full stop. I stopped a foot before hitting one of the riders on the ground… by the time I was able to get around them, everyone was basically gone and it was a solo effort for the rest of the race for me…
