Decided to do a few upgrades to the Miele. New hood covers arrived but they didn’t really fit ( and looked bad!) So upgraded to some tektro aero levers. The shape is certainly more comfortable. I’m sure the aero gains will also be massive
Biggest upgrade was some new pads from mcphails ($5 a pair with holders, bargain!). Now the brakes actually work!
As we enter September (and I felt the bit of chill in the air during the ride last night…and a reminder from @Oliver_Smith) I was reminded that it’s time to start thinking about the autumn edition of our Vintage Lugs ride, and a good opportunity to pull out those old wool jerseys.
Given the shorter route/ride and how successful it was on Father’s Day. I’m thinking Sunday, October 10 (Thanksgiving Sunday) might be an option?
An earlier Sunday (e.g. October 3) is also an option. Not sure pushing it further out will work.
Thoughts? Are all those that attended the ride in June interested in getting the bikes out for a cool ride?
Let’s get the conversation going!
I’m wondering if we shoot for the 3rd and then have the 10th as a fall back in case of bad weather? I don’t mind riding in the rain on my own but it is always more pleasant in a group not to get a face full of spray Not sure the Miele can take fenders!
For me, holidays are always harder to plan around as I don’t know if we’re here or out of town. A LOT of that will probably also depend on what COVID wave 4 looks like! All that said, I’d vote for Oct 3 as well as it avoids the holiday issue (for me, anyway).
This will also force me to either address the basement bike maintenance (mainly a front wheel that’s out of true) or go over the fixie. Nice to have choices! And, I actually have both long and short sleeve wool jersey’s to choose from
Ironically, after posting, I might not be available the 3rd if my son chooses to go to a speed skating competition. If I’m here, I’m interested and Thanksgiving won’t be better. Kids!
My wife has the knitting bug ( accelerated during covid!) and is kindly going to knit me a wool jersey in WCC colours for the ride. Fingers crossed it is going to be ready in time. I thought cycling was expensive until I saw the price of wool!
If anyone is looking to join the October Classic Bike Ride, I’m selling a vintage (1985) Fiori Roma bike, size 21". I purchased this bike this summer intending to join the October ride, but back issues will keep me away this year and I don’t have room to store the bike. Selling for what I paid for it…$200 pedals included. As you’ll see from the photos, the previous owner used it as a commuter and wrapped a bike lock around the frame, resulting in lots of paint scrapes. But, this makes it a perfect commuter or even restoration project. As far as I can tell everything is in good working order although I literally have only ridden it up and down the street when buying it.Feel free to email me at bdoberst(at)uwaterloo.ca
My wife managed to get the wool jersey done in time for the original start fall ride ( she challenged herself to do it in under a month). Modelled after this year’s classic jersey. Came out rather well:
I’m in the process of syncing a similar ride with the St Catharines club…a bit of a “home and home” thing where they come up this way for our ride and we head down to their part of Ontario for their vintage bike ride.
Once we figure out possible dates, I’ll work with @Brian to set up our ride here in Waterloo Region.
Vintage Lugs 2022 is coming in June…keep a look out for a ride posting.
In tradition (2nd year…) we’re almost set on June 19 - 9am-noon (Father’s day) again as it worked out perfectly last year.
Side note: St Catherine’s Cycling Club is also holding their version and aiming for June 25th for a “Vintage Niagara Tour”. I will post more details here when I get them.
There are many from there that are planning on joining our ride here and bringing some sweet steel bikes to Waterloo!
