Arm sun protectors

Does anyone have any recommendations or guidance on arm sun protectors?
Thx
Jon

Hi Jon,

I just wear a long sleeve jersey - no worries of the sleeves falling down.

Sadly Garneau doesn’t make the cool black anymore but that version of the jersey is great.

I got some in 2019 to use when I was commuting in my convertible. I have used them on the bike too on sunny afternoons. They are fine too for cool mornings as arm warmers.

I typically just use SPF 50 sunscreen on my arms, legs and face ( avoiding forehead and eyes) while on the bike.

I’ve had good luck with the rockbros ones from amazon, cheap enough to get a couple pairs.

Trek/Bontrager has an excellent sun sleeve! And available locally at Ziggys.

I’m technically allergic to the sun now, so I’ve tried a few things and these seem to work:

For 15-25 degrees:
Long sleeve jersey, or thin merino wool shirt, potentially with a packable windbreaker/gilet

For 25+ degrees:
Race fit(skin suit/extra thin type) long sleeve jersey, thin cotton/linen shirt (slightly baggy for wicking) or golf shawl sleeves with mesh-ish gilet, rash guard

  • may want to mist water/bug repellent on yourself as needed
  • have not tried merino shirt for this temp yet
  • keep it light in colour!

I like the golf shawl over the normal sleeve covers because I find they slip on me/sensitivity issues.

These are fantastic. Cool, lightweight, great protection, perfect fit.

I’ve used the Pearl Izumi ones for a couple years now. Sun Arm Sleeves – PEARL iZUMi Canada

Light and breathable and protecting. Also cooler than no sleeves on the real hot days.

And they are on sale for $33 right now. Depending on what size you need (based on bicep size).

They also have knee and leg ones as well

Thanks everyone for the input. I’ve learned over the years that sunscreen isn’t practical for me. I either apply it unevenly, or not enough, or it wears (sweats) off. Up to this point, I have tried to wear a really light merino long sleeve under my cycling jersey, but when worn in conjunction with bib shorts, it gets to be a bit much in warm weather. So some arm sleeves will be the next attempt. It sounds like fit results with these things are mixed, which is where the higher quality, multiple sizes likely win out. Nevertheless, I’ll probably start with something cheap before going with a brand name.

Hello @JohnnyG we bought LG sun sleeves which they claim has xylitol in it for cooling effect. We think they work great. Cool and sun blocking. We have had them for easy 6 years. Worth the money.
