Garmin 840 navigation prompt

Hello, I got Garmin 840 this Summer, and have been using it. But I still haven’t figure out something…Today I joined Rec ride. I had the route on my Garmin. I selected a data screen showing 8 items on it. When coming to a turn, sometimes I get a turning alert popping up on my data screen and sometimes I do not get it. Today’s ride I did not pop up. Instead I had to switch to map screen to find out the next turn.

How can I get a turning pop up alert when having a data screen?

Thank you,
Rei

This could be a problem with the route file. I don’t have a garmin but I believe the route file needs to have the cues embedded within it for them to pop up. RideWithGPS autogenerates them but it can sometimes miss them because of problems with the base map or if the route has been reversed.

I find the RWGPS cuesheet fairly unreliable if it was created using the auto-trace feature. You can create a custom cuesheet when editing the route by manually marking a cue for each turn on the map, but I think you need a premium account for that.

If I need to navigate I will usually just keep my Garmin on the map screen to avoid missing turns. On my Edge 810 I can add two data fields on the map (I usually display speed and distance) so I don’t have to swap between screens as often. I do find that keeping the map on display uses more battery though.

I think it was the route. Mine also wasn’t working correctly but usually does.

I found using RidewithGPS the best to create maps but when pinning it (which sends it directly to your Garmin after it syncs) the cues don’t work sometimes, possibly because of the file format. Using Garmin Connect to create my route and then syncing it has always worked though. Sometimes I’ll create my route on RidewithGPS then recreate in Connect.

Thank you to all for sharing your thoughts. I put a data screen and a map screen having an auto scroll function on this morning. Yet it did not show a pop up turning alert on a data screen but I was sure where and when to turn.
I eliminated other screens such as elevation so my garmin was showing two screens a few seconds each.

I have two things on my map screen as well (distance and time of the day)
I found a way to display more items if you wish.
Downloading “MapDashboard” at Garmin Connect IQ store allows you to have 6 items instead of maximum 2. But the font is very small so I wouldn’t do that.

Thank you again
