@Sabrina let me know that registration for the Kelso CX Series is open and the early bird registration to sign up for the whole series ends Friday September 6th. The first race is Tuesday September 10th.
This is a great weekly series on a challenging course. We usually have a number of members that register for the whole series. I’ll try to make it out to a couple. Last year we arranged a race that worked for many of us and all showed up, it was a blast. Hopefully we can do this again.
I really enjoyed the series last year. I raced beginner and it was an awesome opportunity to learn how to race cx in a supportive environment. Not sure it will work with my schedule this year though.
I’ll be signing up for the second wave (hopefully) with my two boys. I think this will be our 5th year racing the series. It is a fun but challenging race which makes for solid training for both fitness and bike handling skills.
The Nordic Cats race series is also pretty awesome but the earlier start makes it tricky for me.
At $99 for the 8-week season (with a Conservation Halton membership) it is a great deal. Early-bird pricing ends this Friday and the first race is next Tuesday. Looking forward to it.
If anyone would like to car pool we do have room for another bike on our bike rack.
Does anyone happen to know if the death circle feature is in the course again this year? That was pretty epic
The Kelso course this year has many of the same features as last year just moved around a bit. Same long uphill start into a few turns (not the 180s of last year) into the trees on a short trail then a climb up to the dreaded run up (or walk up for most of us). Big down hill, no barriers here this year. Then another short up hill into a steep decent. This leads you to the new spiral of death location. Shortly after the start of the spiral there is a single barrier that forced most people to run up the hill right after. The spiral is shorter this year (good for those that found it dizzying). The exit of the spiral is a steep off camber climb/run up into another section with a few twists and turns and the final set of barriers. Finally you follow the gravel path back to the start climb. No stairs this year. I believe all categories do the same course. The novice/beginners did 3 laps, the sport did 4/5? (I did 4), and the elite did 5.
Just a note that the first race does not include the “dreaded run up”
I found the spiral thing pretty fun - it’s loops in a little valley, so you climb then try to carry speed around. I think it’s a good course this year.
I’m glad I went out - fun, challenging, and made me feel more alive I started at the back of novice, passed a few people, lapped a few small children near the end, and finished roughly at the back
